Jaume Collet-Serra is to direct a new Hollywood remake of Escape To Victory.

Here’s a project that’s been rumoured for some time, but now finally looks like it’s moving forward.

The marriage of war film and football movie has made Escape To Victory an enduring fixture in the UK, and to date it remains the only film that boasts an ensemble featuring Michael Caine, Pele, Sylvester Stallone, John Wark and Russell Osman.

The story of prisoners of war playing a football match against their captors will now be retold by director Jaume Collet-Serra. He’s helmed the likes of The Commuter, Non-Stop and The Shallows, and for a while was attached to the stuck-in-development-hell live action version of Akira.

There’s no news yet on casting for the new film – wonder if John Wark still has his boots? – but the script is getting a rewrite from Anthony Tambakis (after Gavin O’Connor penned a recent draft).

No word yet on when filming is set to begin, nor a release date.
