It looks as though Ridley Scott will after all get to pick up the story of Alien: Covenant for a further prequel.

The Alien franchise has been in something of a limbo since 2017’s Alien: Covenant. The second of the Alien prequels directed by Ridley Scott, the movie set up a third, with the aim being to ultimately join the narrative to the start of the original 1979 classic Alien. But the mixed reception to Covenant meant that 20th Century Fox appeared to be applying the brakes.

Since then, of course, Fox has moved under new owners, courtesy of Disney’s acquisition of the company. And the assumption was that for the time being at least, Alien was resting. But apparently not so. As part of a piece at Variety saluting the original movie’s 40th birthday, there’s a line that reveals a third prequel is in the works. Not only that, Ridley Scott is going to direct it. The new movie is reportedly in the scripting stages at the moment, although couldn’t tell you who’s penning that script.

Nonetheless, if it’s happening, don’t expect it to take too long to get moving. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
