British movie podcast of the week: Devil Times Five

Our weekly movie podcast recommendation this week has a blend of horror and comedy to it – and a very successful blend at that.

The horror and comedy genres combine really well. We know this from classics like Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Shaun Of The Dead and the highly underrated Tucker & Dale vs Evil. If you like your horror analytical, but hilarious enough to make the devil himself chuckle, you need to check out Devil Times Five.

Devil Times Five is a monthly podcast which takes the horrific, petrifying, gruesome and super-obscure from the horror genre and not only talks about it, but talks about it with comedic flair.

Main host, and comedy venue owner Cliff Barnes is joined by a group of ‘devils’, some of which have rotated over the past 44 episodes. But the line-up currently consists of British stand-up comedians Phil Jerrod, Emily McQuade, Luke Poulton and Bryony No. Being stand-up comedians, you know straight away that these hosts are going to be full of wit, vigour and hilarity and Devil Times Five not only excels at being a great horror movie podcast, but also really really funny!

Originally launched in January 2017, the original premise was for a horror movie podcast that was funny and fast-paced ,whilst also being factually accurate. Episodes of Devil Times Five aren’t just restricted to singular movie titles, but also the work of horror directors, films within a certain sub-genre and entire franchises (such as the recommended episode below, which deals with all ten Hellraiser movies. Who knew there were ten Hellraiser movies?!)

Episodes are produced and edited by Cliff, who edits episodes tightly to keep to around 80 minutes and to keep the jokes and laughter flowing. He ends the episodes with a quiz called Scary Noises, which is engaging for the listener, as well as the hosts taking part.

Cliff believes that horror aficionados are blessed with dozens of Blu-ray distribution companies that are dedicated to unearthing obscurities, and Devil Times Five is here to dissect, deconstruct and delight, in a droll fashion, as many of these as possible.

It may be called Devil Times Five but you could say it’s angelic to listen to, actually. Chortle.
