Each week we highlight an independent UK movie podcast we reckon you should check out – and Diminishing Returns very much fits that bill.
The law of diminishing returns is when the amount you get out of something is less than the amount put in. Luckily, Diminishing Returns, the podcast, is all killer, no filler.
The podcast was created and hosted by Sol, Allen and Calvin; three friends who met studying film production at university. They all either work, or have worked, in the film industry and they’ve all been friends for over 12 years. Calvin, who also runs a James Bond YouTube vlog wanted an opportunity to branch out from the world of shaken, not stirred Martinis and all three wanted an outlet whereby they could talk about films they loved, while also spending that quality time together. A podcast seemed a great excuse, and Diminishing Returns was brought into being.
Each episode of Diminishing Returns offers an in-depth review and analysis of the film (or series of films), followed by the hosts’ attempts to pitch a sequel, in order to make improvements. The featured movie could be a huge Hollywood blockbuster, or it could be something small, obscure and independent. Everything is considered fair game for Diminishing Returns to tackle. They’ve even had their share of big name guests, including Eduardo Sanchez, the director of The Blair Witch Project, and Thomas Turgoose and Andrew Ellis, the stars of This Is England.
Often podcasts with deep friendships tend to have the best chemistry and Diminishing Returns is no exception. Each episode feels legitimately fun, easy-going and welcomes you into the friendship group. There’s no strict formula to how they structure episodes; they just want to be fun, informative and a bit different to any other podcast you might have listened to.
With over 200 episodes available, there’s something for every taste (including the aforementioned James Bond).
