Our weekly British independent movie podcast of the week slot returns, with this one being an Anglo-Irish collaboration.
Bit of a deviation for this one, as it’s British-ish….
I Understood That Reference is hosted by Ross and Rob, two guys from Dublin. Okay, so Ireland isn’t in the UK, but while Ross is based in Dublin, Rob is currently living in London so we’re letting this one by on a technicality.
Naturally a podcast called “I Understood That Reference” could only have been inspired by one man; A hero. A legend. A leader.
The star-spangled man with a plan?
It was Rob, actually.
As with the majority of movie podcast birthing stories it was an alcohol fuelled two-hour discussion between Ross and Rob specifically about the Avengers movies which generated the idea of doing a podcast. They had a plan; more than 12% of a plan too. The name would obviously come from the line Captain America utters in The Avengers, but otherwise their podcast would just be two guys, discussing all things movies, games, comic books and pop culture, and just have a great time doing it.
Ross and Rob have known each other since first working together in Ireland. Their friendship was born of movie discussions, and it’s a friendship that comes across so genuinely and naturally during their episodes.
Their podcast is mostly spontaneous too, which makes for some excellent jokes, great one-liners, witty remarks and the occasional obvious delight or disgust at the topic of conversation. Features such as Rossfact/Robfact are always engaging and their Twitter game is so on point they were once tweeted at by Edgar Wright!
I Understood That Reference is funny, interesting and a movie geek’s dream. It’s well worth your time. In fact, you’ll probably end up thinking while you’re listening….. “I can do this all day!”
