British movie podcast of the week: Is It Worth It?

Every week, we recommend an independent movie podcast that we think is worth your time: this week, a look at Is It Worth It.

Remember when you could just go to the cinema with a friend, watch any old film, and then chat on the way home about what you liked and disliked? It seems like such a weird old pipe dream, but that’s what we all used to do, and that’s what a lot of movie podcasters used to do. Changes in our lifestyles mean changes to those podcasts that used to rely on regular cinemagoing experiences, and Is It Worth It? is one such podcast who’ve taken the negativity of social distancing and turned it positive.

Created by Craig Fields and David Long, two old friends who supported each other through hard times by regular cinema visits, they decided to start recording their thoughts on every movie they watched and Is It Worth It? was born. Over time, they were joined by regular collaborators Ranjeet Nanrah, Herbie Hilsdon, Floss Hafter-Smith and Shivani Rayat, as well as a supporting team of Toby Dunbraveanu, Kraig Archibald, Ian Silverstein and Alex Robert for a wide variety of spin-off topics on their main podcast feed and special episodes and have gone from a team of two to a proud team of ten in two and a half years!

Is It Worth It? has taken this opportunity during lockdown to reflect on their experiences with mental health. For Mental Health Awareness Week it published a series of podcast episodes related to mental health, and the importance of self-care. Mental health remains so important, especially during these stressful times, and it’s wonderful that this podcast has taken the time to concentrate on such an important topic and have the hosts be so open and honest about their personal struggles with loneliness, mental illness and physical illness, while also linking these topics to a relevant movie, which they recommend each episode.

While they also have an extensive and detailed back catalogue of recent cinema which should absolutely be listened to, these episodes are short (7-12 minutes each) and because of the subject is so important for all of us, this week we’re recommending them all.

Because yes, it is worth it.
