British movie podcast of the week: Is Paul Dano OK?

The work of regularly beaten up actor Paul Dano is at the heart of our movie podcast recommendation of the week.

Look up actor, producer, writer and director Paul Dano on IMDb, and you’ll notice several interesting facts about him. Facts such as he’s appeared in three Best Picture Oscar-nominated films, he plays lead guitar and vocals of his band Mook, and he was ranked #5 on Entertainment Weekly’s ‘30 Under 30’ actors list in 2008.

Scroll down to the Did You Know? section though, and you’ll notice his trademark: ‘Often plays characters who receive beatings’. It was this reason that Is Paul Dano OK? was created; to pay homage to an underrated actor, known for his quirky supporting roles, and a man who gets beaten up on screen rather a lot!

Matt Brothers and Daryl Bär are no strangers to this section of our site. Their terrific other podcast Sudden Double Deep (also hosted by Daryl’s wife Jeanette) was featured back in December 2020, and their inspiration to start Is Paul Dano OK? actually came from another previously-featured podcast.

After their good friend Petros, host of Caged In, had great success with his podcast focused on the work of Nicolas Cage. Matt and Daryl wondered who else could warrant a show dedicated to their work. They fixated on Paul Dano on his ability to get regularly beaten up, as well as the fact that not only is Paul Dano remarkably talented, but has an almost chameleonic nature to his film appearances; he’s been in more movies than people think.

Is Paul Dano OK? covers Dano’s mainstream work, as well as the obscure independent movies and TV shows he cut his teeth on. Just being a Paul Dano podcast should be enough to entice you, but get Matt and Daryl involved and it becomes a must-listen. If you’ve ever listened to Sudden Double Deep, you’ll know they’re knowledgeable, engaging and experienced hosts that hook you in with their infectious enthusiasm and professionalism. Is Paul Dano OK? also has a truly brilliant theme song, which will stay in your head for days afterwards, written and performed by Daryl himself.

Matt takes the lead on most of the episode preparation and guest bookings, and Daryl is the tech whizz, working on the editing of episodes. Together, they make a pretty formidable podcasting team. Are they OK? Yeah, they’re OK.

Is Paul Dano OK? We’re not 100% certain on that, but we can tell you that Is Paul Dano OK? is more than OK. It’s great.
