British movie podcast of the week: Journey Through Sci-Fi

Each week, we highlight an independent UK movie podcast – and this time, we’ve got some sci-fi for you.

When a podcast decides to take on one genre of cinema, you know they’re going to go all in, and Journey Through Sci-Fi does exactly that. Hosted by old uni friends Matt and James, they spent ten years chatting in the pub about various science fiction classics, and then realised they could put it all in a podcast and so Journey Through Sci-Fi was born.

Each week, they look at two different science fiction films and a theme which connects both. Currently they are doing a whole season on artificial intelligence in sci-fi cinema, and plan to explore other sub-genres in the near future, such as time travel, dystopias, alien life and space exploration.

What’s fantastic about Journey Through Sci-Fi, is that unlike most movie podcasts, they truly do take the listener on a journey, all the way from early classics such as 1927’s Metropolis and 1951’s The Day The Earth Stood Still, all the way through to modern cinematic masterpieces, such as Blade Runner and The Matrix. Science fiction is such an all-encompassing topic with multiple sub-genres, and Journey Through Sci-Fi aims to get the audience to relate to the themes in these movies by asking questions about current society, our reliance on artificial intelligence and technology, and whether these works of science fiction could be, or are being now considered, science fact. They also talk about the social commentary of the time, for example the fear surrounding the ‘Millennium Bug’  in 1999, and how that related to the sci-fi stories being told during that era.

Each episode is well researched and produced, and it’s clear that Matt and James are long-time friends with great rapport. This podcast only started in August 2019, but you wouldn’t know it from listening. Matt and James clearly have so much love for the science fiction genre and an easy-going, relaxed hosting style that belies the few months this podcast has been airing.

Isaac Asimov once said “Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today – but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.”  Let Journey Through Sci-Fi audibly navigate you to safety.
