British movie podcast of the week: Movies and Tea

In our weekly spot where we recommend a terrific UK movie podcast, here’s one that owes a debt to the film Event Horizon.

To many, Paul W S Anderson’s science fiction horror thriller Event Horizon is a flawed masterpiece that’s unfortunately never been given the appreciation, or indeed the cut, that it deserved. If you’ve not seen it, it comes highly recommended by the way. What’s the link between this feature and Event Horizon? Well, this week’s British movie podcast literally came about through a mutual love of that film.

Elwood Jones and Kim Lo previously hosted a gaming podcast together, while also individually blogging about movies. It made perfect sense for them to join forces and create their own film podcast. Elwood’s other podcast, The Asian Cinema Fan Club, was featured back in February 2020 and that article can be found here. In planning Movies and Tea, Elwood and Kim kept coming back to Event Horizon and wanted a unique concept on film podcasting in which they could incorporate their mutual adoration for, not only the movie itself but also the fascinating visual style of Paul W.S. Anderson.

The concept of Movies and Tea is simple, but brilliant. Each season they focus on the material of one particular director. For Season 1, that meant only one thing: Paul W.S. Anderson. Movies and Tea carefully selects each director they feature for variation on filmmaking techniques and unique filmographies. So far they have covered the aforementioned Paul W.S. Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, Sofia Coppola, Ang Lee and David Fincher, as well as a series of bonus After Hours episodes. Movies and Tea charts the evolution of directors from their first feature, through to their most current and, especially in the case of visionary directors like Guillermo del Toro, the particular themes or trademarks repeated throughout their filmography.

A visit to their website (link below) also provides in-depth reviews by both Kim and Elwood, as well as a feature called The Friday Film Club, where both select a particularly brilliant, but possibly underrated film that they would recommend you hunt out for your weekend’s viewing.

After all this, why is the recommended episode not Event Horizon? Well, with the new Mortal Kombat movie about to be released, Elwood and Kim’s assessment of the 1995 original is full of brilliant facts, a true love and respect of the game its based on, and incredibly enjoyable to listen to.

Movies and Tea. As podcasts go, it’s a flawless victory…
