British movie podcast of the week: Projections Podcast

We continue to highlight a British independent movie podcast each week – and this week, it’s Projections.

For many cinemagoers, the world of movies is just an easy hobby; an escape into a different world where you can enjoy a multitude of explosions and then get back to your life, but for a lot of film lovers, the cinematic experience is a varied and fruitful look into the human psyche. Why we think and act the way we do, and how our experiences can be projected onto the screen via a character’s journey. There’s one terrific podcast that looks into the world of cinema from a psychoanalytical point of view, and that’s Projections Podcast.

Hosted by Sarah Kathryn Cleaver and Mary Wild, two women who met at a course Mary was teaching on Lars von Trier’s ‘Depression Trilogy’ in London, Projections Podcast is more than just two people talking about a movie; it’s an in-depth look at the psychoanalysis of film, and how life imitates art.

Initially looking for a collaborator, Mary instinctively admired Sarah’s good taste in music, film and art and they set about identifying a way they could work together on a mutually fascinating and meaningful project. When Sarah suggested taking their lengthy and interesting discussions and recording them, as with all great podcasts, Projections Podcast was born.

Whilst Sarah and Mary have very similar taste in film in their everyday lives, they each bring their own diverse views to the topic of discussion. For the podcast, they lean towards darker, more complex themes, which is split into episodic seasons. So far they have covered Mental Illness, Fashion and Women in Horror, with their next season based on work culture and the economic system, which is something very relevant to current events.

The premise of their podcast, that you need to look deep into the meanings behind film, resonates throughout the whole project. Even the logo, which on first glance looks fairly basic, is actually a detailed homage to 80s nostalgia, VHS aesthetics and the unconscious. Every part of this podcast is meticulously crafted to be enjoyable and engaging, but also incredibly diverse and intelligent in its analysis.

If you like your podcasts intellectual with a massive side of wit and passion, Projections Podcast is for you.
