British movie podcast of the week: Ramblin: An Amblin Podcast

Our movie podcast recommendation of the week deals with the work of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment – more here.

The film production company Amblin is synonymous with many’s movie-going childhood. The familiar logo of a silhouetted E.T. and Elliott flying a bicycle across the moon, the ever steady leadership and association with the great Steven Spielberg; Amblin is responsible for some of the biggest movies ever, and so its material in particular seemed a prime source for a new movie podcast.

When Andy and Josh met studying film at the University of Warwick back in 2011, their shared love of these classics were pure bonding material for a fast friendship. When they both ended up moving to London post-graduation, they knew they both wanted to create a film podcast but couldn’t settle on that one great idea.

And then – great scott! Lockdown gave them the idea to focus on the Amblin movies they grew up with, as well as the lesser-known in Amblin’s back catalogue. With a logo created by Andy’s girlfriend Emily, a theme song produced by friends Robert J. Hunter and Greg Sheffield of The Robert J. Hunter Band, and a list of Amblin’s back catalogue going back to 1981, this Amblin podcast was ready to Ramblin.

While Ramblin: An Amblin Podcast is a fairly new podcast, they’ve really hit the ground running, both in their confident hosting style and episode topics. It’s not many podcasts that will have covered Poltergeist, E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, Gremlins, The Goonies and Back To The Future just within their first ten episodes. Often these are movies that people haven’t seen since childhood so there may be a case of some rose-tinted spectacles despite viewing with fresh eyes. What’s great about Ramblin: An Amblin Podcast is that Andy and Josh want to explore the impact of this nostalgia, and just why these films means so much to so many. They take on this challenge with sincere respect and admiration, as well as taking the time to reflect on whether the movie holds up.

Not only are Andy and Josh producing great material, they’re also part of a mini network of other independent podcasts; all helping and supporting each other, which is lovely to see at any time but especially during a global pandemic. Hearing stories of the podcast community coming together is especially heart-warming when everyone is creating passionate, inspired and endearing content like Ramblin: An Amblin Podcast are.
