British movie podcast of the week: Skip To The End

In our weekly spot where we recommend a British film podcast, a salute to the wonderful Skip To The End.

Every podcast we’ve featured so far in our recommendation spot has been one that is regularly releasing episodes. This week’s a bit different because this podcast actually officially finished in 2019. However, since Skip To The End is a bit of a British movie podcast institution, and as they recently released a special lockdown episode, we felt that it was time to give this podcast the feature it deserves.

Taking inspiration from a classic line in Spaced, Skip To The End has been a remarkable success story to inspire podcasts all over the world, but like all good podcasts, it started with chats down the local pub between original hosts Mark, Ben and Adam. This culminated in recording their first episode in August 2014. This episode was so popular that it spurred them on to become a fortnightly podcast.

A standard podcasting origin story, you might think, but then something magic happened. Less than a year after starting Skip To The End, they crossed the magic one million downloads threshold. Riding on the highs of their success, they continued onwards and upwards, and the following year Adam left the podcast to be replaced by Gemma.

Mark, Ben and Gemma continued on their upward trajectory, attending big movie premieres, being endorsed as a top film podcast by Film4 and creating a sell-out event for their five-year anniversary called SkipFest in August 2019 (we’re reliably informed that lots of beverages were consumed that weekend). That’s more than enough to be spending your time with, but they were also focused on producing the quality, fun, accessible and unpretentious podcast episodes that made them big. Despite smashing it with the download numbers and repeatedly finding themselves topping the podcast charts, they never forgot their roots and remained thankful to their dedicated and loyal fanbase, the SkipFam.

However, all good stories must have a beginning, a middle and an end and they decided to skip to the end of Skip To The End on a high note. In December 2019 they published their final episode, on Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. Since then, Mark has continued with his own podcast Mark And Me, Gemma has started a project curating Spotify playlists and Ben has retired from podcasting.

Fear not, for this is not the end of Skip To The End. They continue to unite the Skipfam in regular online get-togethers, quizzes and competitions; a community which they remain incredibly proud of. They also saw how tough 2020 had been for a lot of people and responding to requests to return from the SkipFam, Skip To The End released a surprise lockdown episode on 16th January 2021 which jumped straight to the top of the podcast charts. You’ll be delighted to know that they’ve also not ruled out future one-off specials either.

Considering their amazing list of accomplishments, Skip To The End remain incredibly down-to-earth, friendly, approachable and humbled by their incredible success story. Their back catalogue is varied, rich and compulsive listening. It just goes to show that hard work, dedication and not taking yourself too seriously will reap the benefit of a legacy that will be long-lived.

This is one podcast that you definitely won’t want to skip to the end on.
