British movie podcast of the week: Star Wars Sessions

Our independent podcast recommendation of the week? It’s got a Star Wars theme to it.

With a cinematic pedigree going back over 40 years, it’s no surprise that the Star Wars franchise remains a goldmine of discussion for fans the world over, and it was an online discussion forum where hosts Matt Hudson (aka Jabba the Hud) and Luke Bligh (aka Luke Blighwalker) met and started chatting about the fact that Han did indeed shoot first and whether that Stroomtrooper, who was too tall for a doorway is okay.

After then discovering they worked on the same street, they met for coffee and as Matt already had a podcast, he invited Luke over to the dark side (aka his current podcast) for three special Star Wars episodes they named “The Star Wars Sessions”. Those episodes proved so popular, that the podcast Star Wars Sessions became a weekly separate show dealing with the Star Wars Universe; the movies, the TV shows, the lore and the characters.

Star Wars, as a fandom, doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to inclusivity and kindness online, however if more fans were like Matt and Luke, its fandom would be a much nicer place to live in. Their love of not only Lucas’ original stories and the prequel trilogy but also the post Disney takeover of Lucasfilm, is honest, knowledgeable and pleasant to listen to. Of course they have their opinions of the stories and characters involved, but they love everything about Star Wars, despite acknowledging its flaws and most importantly they respect others’ opinions too. The love they have for Star Wars is palpable throughout each episode of Star Wars Sessions, and even casual fans of the franchise will find something to enjoy.

As a result, Star Wars Sessions is an intelligent, funny, all-encompassing podcast on every part of the Star Wars galaxy – from Episode IV A New Hope all the way through to The Mandalorian. And with more stories on the way from Disney, the Star Wars Sessions rebellion is only going to get bigger and more powerful.
