Each week, we recommend a new independent UK movie podcast we think is well worth your ears: and here’s why The Final Girls is worth a listen.
The Final Girl cliche in movies is the girl who lasts ’til the very end in a horror movie. Usually a virgin, she’s the sole survivor; the only one left alive to tell the story. She’s the Laurie Strode, the Sidney Prescott, the Nancy Thompson… even Ellen Ripley could be considered an example.
The Final Girls is a podcast that celebrates horror films, feminism and the convergence of the two. Founded and cultivated by Anna Bogutskaya and Olivia Howe, The Final Girls is not just a podcast. The podcast actually came about as a companion piece to a curatorial project they were putting together called Here Be Witches.
Season one of the podcast is therefore all about witchcraft and mixes film and TV discussions, focused on the representation of witches in visual media and providing a feminist critique, rather than relying on nostalgia. Season two of the podcast launches today (12th June) and explores female monsters and themes of prejudice, rejection, anger and pain.
The Final Girls podcast is meticulously researched and produced. The love they have for the horror genre is apparent in each episode. Episodes are in-depth, charming and intelligent and contain regular guests who have a passion for the horror genre and discussing it from a feminist point of view. It might be the first season’s witchcraft theme, but listening to this podcast definitely casts a spell of some sort. Once you listen to one episode of this insightful show, you won’t be able to stop!
These particular final girls don’t just curate films and produce a podcast, however. They also run screenings and events, have a touring programme called We Are The Weirdos, to help find new talent within the industry, and a horror film journal called Bloody Women, committed to highlighting the views of women and non-binary writers.
