British movie podcast of the week: The Prestige Podcast

Welcome to our weekly spot where we highlight a UK film podcast that we think is well worth your time: this week, it’s The Prestige Podcast.

The film 300 is most famous for depicting King Leonidas leading 300 Spartans into battle against 300,000 Persian soldiers, but its newest claim to fame is the fact it also spawned the latest recommended British movie podcast The Prestige Podcast. You were thinking Christopher Nolan, perhaps?

It was a heated discussion about the value of the film 300 which led hosts, and old school friends, Rob Kaiju and Sam Knowles to decide to put their respective knowledge and experience to good use and create a podcast. Rob has spent over a decade working in the film industry as an editor and colourist, and Sam is a Cambridge-educated doctor of English and lecturer. As The Prestige Podcast’s name might suggest, their combined skills make for an excellent in-depth analytical look at popular cinema.

Debuting in 2015, they’ve produced almost 200 episodes, and are now in their fourth season. The Prestige Podcast has been part of Rob and Sam’s lives through respective marriages and the birth of children, and shows no signs of slowing down, in either production or content.

Currently split into four 50-episode seasons, the first season covered a split of interesting movies chosen by the hosts, whereas subsequent seasons have had a theme. Season 2 concentrated on film franchises and Season 3 looked at the work of specific directors. The current fourth season is focussing on specific genres of cinema: Martial Arts, Vampires, High School and Heist movies.

It’s this mix of Rob’s film knowledge and Sam’s academia which makes The Prestige Podcast so fascinating to listen to. Each episode goes into the deep themes, references and ideas the movie portrays, as well as the cinematic techniques used to tell the story effectively. It’s the sort of podcast you can listen to and immediately learn something new about the industry, and that’s just one of the many reasons this podcast is terrific.

‘The Prestige’ is the term for the third act of a magic trick. The Prestige Podcast is, simply put, magic.
