Welcome to the spot where we recommend a movie podcast to you every week – and this time, we’re going back to the world of the VHS tape.
Format wars are not a new phenomenon. Before the myriad of streaming services were vying for our time and money, it was Blu-ray vs HD-DVD, before that DVD vs LaserDisc, but the daddy of all format wars was VHS vs Betamax. With VHS tapes now experiencing a similar resurgence to vinyl records, it seems like now’s the time for VHS to.. strike back!
The VHS Strikes Back podcast, hosted by Dave and Chris, purely looks at movies released during the heady and nostalgic VHS era. The podcast came about as an offshoot of their existing podcast, where they regularly discussed comic book movies but found themselves wanting to discuss the movies they had grown up with.
It was when Dave played bass and Chris sang lead in a band back in 2006 in Manchester that their friendship harmonised, so to speak, and this led on to the two collaborating on multiple podcasting projects, both individually and together. It’s this chemistry that fuels their podcast collaborations, and it’s most notably felt on The VHS Strikes Back, which feels like a very personal project for these two ex-bandmates, whose genuine friendship permeates through each episode.
The VHS Strikes Back started with the popular movies, but gradually started to tackle some of the lesser-known and underappreciated films of the VHS era, with both Chris and Dave admitting to stitching each other up with their respective choices. They also invite their Patrons to offer up films to review, which was where the recommended episode below came from (and it is an absolute doozy of a movie!).
We crave nostalgia most of the time, but with a pandemic and political unrest in the world, sometimes it’s nice to be able to use a podcast to travel back in time somewhat. The VHS Strikes Back provides a warm, safe, fun environment for us to join in with their conversation. You’ll always feel welcome with Dave and Chris.
