The filmmaking industry remains an enigma to most of us. Just how do movies get made? Hearing some of those film stories, it’s easy to believe it’s exactly like herding cats. More importantly though, how does a director actually become a director? How did any director start out? Where do they start with the vision they want to achieve?
The terrific You Never Forget Your First podcast answers those questions, by only focusing on the first features of directors who’ve since gone on to make their mark in Hollywood and beyond. Ryan Coogler, Sam Mendes, George A. Romero, Patty Jenkins…. every director has to start somewhere.
Hosts Dom, Benas, Louis and Sparrow all have experience in the realms of the arts. Dom is an aspiring director, Benas and Sparrow are both scriptwriters and Louis used to act in the theatre. Having made a few short films together, they’re fully aware of the work involved in filmmaking and being so inspired by first-time filmmakers, channelled their passion into You Never Forget Your First.
Starting your own podcast can be a daunting occurrence. With no experience, you often have to just follow your gut and hope for the best. More often that not though, extraordinary things happen when people work hard and follow their dreams. That’s especially apparent for first-time directors, and you can feel it in the bare bones of You Never Forget Your First. They just genuinely love and admire the craft of filmmaking, and they really love talking about it on their podcast. They review low-budget independents up to big-budget blockbusters, with lashings of humour and heart.
If your first response to finding out a director’s first feature is “that’s their first film?”, You Never Forget Your First is here to remind you that there’s no overnight success in filmmaking, that just one chance got someone’s foot in the Hollywood exec’s door and that a debut feature is a very special achievement, whether it’s successful or not. Those first features deserve to be celebrated, and while these directors will move on to their sophomore efforts, You Never Forget Your First will continue to champion the debuts.
