Our independent movie podcast of the week recommendation is a co-production between Scotland and America: introducing Overinvested.
We’ve featured half-British podcasts before, but Overinvested, with hosts Gavia Baker Whitelaw based in Scotland and Morgan Davies over in the United States is definitely a valid entry due to its 50% Scottish roots and the first transatlantic recommendation!
Motivated by the lack of female fronted movie podcasts (something you might regrettably notice if you’re a regular reader of this feature), Gavia and Morgan set about to create a podcast that covered a wealth of cinematic history – from classic to modern blockbusters – through their shared experiences of being overinvested in pop culture, as well as individual areas of expertise; Morgan being knowledgeable in classic cinema and Gavia, as a geek culture journalist, covering the modern blockbusters.
They describe their friendship as ‘very millennial’, using Twitter and email predominantly to keep in touch, originally meeting online and only meeting up in real life once a year. They also successfully kickstarted a publishing company together; it’s clear that these ladies mean business – in podcasting and in publishing!
If a new perspective on a film you love (or indeed don’t!) is what you’re looking for, Gavia and Morgan deliver this in spades. Episodes of Overinvested are well planned and prepared, and they delve into the film’s creative history, themes, highlights and well as analysis of what’s great about it, or indeed what went wrong. They also occasionally go into additional detail on political subtext, queer theory and technical aspects, as well as talk more about a movie’s pop culture impact and star power.
Gavia and Morgan have been hosting Overinvested for four years, and still adore talking to each other about film, as well as receiving regular feedback from listeners who often download episodes multiple times. It calls to the quality of their podcast, and to their rapport. And we very much recommend it.
