In a further blow to the project, director Stephen Daldry steps away from the planned movie of the musical Wicked.

At the end of last year, we had the pleasure of chatting with the creator of the Wicked musical, Stephen Schwartz. At that point, we asked whether the plan for a December 2021 release for the movie adaptation of the show was realistic. He told us in no uncertain terms that he didn’t expect that date to be met.

Then, of course, this year happened and the movie got delayed anyway, to an unnamed date. And now we learn that further turbulence has hit the project, with the departure of its director.

Billy Elliot helmer Stephen Daldry had been set to direct the movie, but it’s now being reported that he’s departed the project.

The problem is a scheduling issue for Daldry, which suggests that the Wicked film may actually be getting close to going before the cameras.

We’ve still no word on just when to expect the film, but for Universal, the challenge looks like being hiring a new helmer first. Clunky sentence that, but the coffee hasn’t started working here yet.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
