Aaron Taylor-Johnson will play Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter in solo film

Kraven will be the latest Spider-Man character to get the solo movie treatment, it has been announced.

We’ve already seen Tom Hardy as Venom, and the symbiotic lethal protector will be joined by his psychopathic counterpart, Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson, in the upcoming Venom: Let There Be Carnage. There’s also the oft-delayed film about Spider-Man’s vampiric nemesis, Morbius, starring Jared Leto, which has been pushed all the way back to January 2022.

Now, Sony has announced another Spider-Man spin-off film that will feature Kraven the Hunter. What’s more, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been cast in the lead role.

Reports are stating that Taylor-Johnson has signed a multi-picture deal with Sony to portray the Russian immigrant, Sergei Kravinoff, who is compelled to prove to the world that he is the greatest hunter to have ever lived.

In the comic books, this often leads to Kraven hunting ‘the ultimate game’ in the form of Spider-Man to prove his superiority, although it’s unlikely that we’ll see that occur in this film as the Sony spin-off films, whilst ostensibly set in the same universe as Tom Holland’s MCU Spidey, don’t appear to have any plans to feature the wall-crawler himself. This would rule out a straight adaptation of Kraven’s Last Hunt, the most iconic Kraven tale (and one of the most famous stories in comic book history), where Kraven’s pursuit of Spider-Man leads to intense, dark psycho-drama.

Taylor-Johnson is of course no stranger to superheroes, having portrayed both Quicksilver in the MCU, and Kick-Ass, in Matthew Vaughn’s memorable satire of the superhero genre. The film will be directed by J C  Chandor, director of A Most Violent Year. The movie has been set for a 13th January 2023 release date. We’ll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
