Ex Machina director Alex Garland’s next project is gathering steam, with Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear set to appear in his next venture.

Alex Garland hasn’t directed a feature film since 2018’s Annihilation, but that’s all set to change with the news that his next project, titled Men, is gathering pace and has found a home at A24.

Although little is yet known in terms of plot, Deadline, who first reported the story, has stated that the film ‘follows a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.’

Jessie Buckley is set to star (although that deal is reportedly still being finalised,) alongside Rory Kinnear.

As you would expect from a storyteller like Garland, he’s also written the script for the project, whilst Scott Rudin, a regular collaborator of Garland’s, will produce.

Men also marks Garland’s return to A24, with whom he developed 2014’s Ex Machina. Following the rather unsatisfying experience Garland endured with Annihilation, where Paramount ultimately sold the film’s international rights to Netflix following unresolved discussions about a third act recut, A24 seems like a much better home for the director’s storytelling instincts.

Garland’s most recent work has been on the smaller screen, in the form of the rather phenomenal miniseries DEVS, which you can still catch on BBC iPlayer as we speak. All in all then, we hope Men will mark Garland’s work returning to cinema screens for the first time in seven or eight years, in the UK at least.

We’ll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
