America Ferrera will costar in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film – joining a main cast of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film is sounding more and more interesting. With Warner Bros and Mattel producing alongside Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap Entertainment, all we know about the story so far is that it will be focused on the classic line of dolls. Given how many different types there have been over the years, that doesn’t really clear things up. Now, America Ferrera joins the cast of the mysterious movie, Deadline reports.

Nothing has been revealed about the character she will be playing. For now, we only know that Robbie is set to play the titular character, with Ryan Gosling starring opposite her as Ken. As well as directing, Gerwig penned the script alongside director (and her partner) Noah Baumbach.

While there are few details on Barbie available, the film is in safe hands. Both Gerwig and Baumbach are acclaimed filmmakers – Gerwig has been nominated for multiple awards for Lady Bird and Little Women, while Baumbach impressed with his writing and directing work on 2019’s Marriage Story.

Ferrera has most recently produced and directed episodes of Netflix series Gentefied, and will appear in Apple TV+ show WeCrashed. It’s due for release on the streaming platform next month, and Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway will costar. In addition to this, Ferrera is also set to make her feature directorial debut with I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Erika Sánchez. Surprisingly, Barbie will mark her first acting role in a film since 2019’s How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, in which she provided the voice for Astrid.

Margot Robbie’s other upcoming projects include Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, and details on it are scarce. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the cast is said to be even bigger than most Anderson films, which are usually impressive ensembles. As for Gosling, he stars in Netflix’s upcoming action thriller The Gray Man, directed and produced by Anthony and Joe Russo. The film, also starring Chris Evans, Ana de Armes, and Indian actor Dhanush, is intended to kickstart a franchise on the level of James Bond.

We’ll bring you more details on Barbie as we hear them.
