Ammonite is finally getting a proper UK cinema release

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan star in Ammonite, a film that seemed to have bypassed a UK cinema release – but not so.

Well, here’s a bit of good news. After debuting at the London Film Festival last year, Francis Lee’s movie Ammonite was all set for a full UK cinema release. Then, well, things happened, and Lionsgate in the end – in order to qualify it for awards consideration – had to go for a premium video on demand release a few weeks ago.

Now, though, Lionsgate has announced – and this is a surprise – that the film will make it to the big screen in the UK after all. It’s planning to release the movie in selected cinemas around the UK from May 17th, the date that cinemas reopen around the country (well, indoor ones anyway).

We’re not expecting it to be a huge release, but it sounds like it’s going to be something, especially for a film that in particular can use the audio capabilities of a well-set-up cinema particularly well.

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan star in the film, and here’s a reminder of its trailer.
