A trailer for Annette, starring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver has been released, as the film is announced to be opening July’s Cannes film festival.

Rescheduled Cannes festival has selected the new musical Annette to open the high profile festival. Starring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, it’s directed by Leos Carax who was last seen in 2014 with the short film Gradiva. Making his grand return with a script from Ron and Russell Mael which marks their first feature-length script. The pair are known for their musical work as pop duo Sparks.

Driver and Cotillard are both known for their intense and impressive performances and Annette looks no different, just from the trailer you can almost hear the awards nominations being announced. They’ve kept the singing to a minimum but the soundtrack and general oppressive vibe of the film’s trailer make it sure to be an immersive and interesting film. The plot follows standup comedian Henry and singer Ann as the birth of their first child Annette changes their lives.

I wasn’t aware Adam Driver in a musical was something I needed in my life, but after his heart-breaking rendition of Being Alive in Marriage Story, I think we can all agree, this is exactly what we need.

Annette film will screen at Cannes on the 6th July, after the festival’s opening ceremony, and will simultaneously go on general release in France. We’ll update with any UK release information as and when we know. Cannes Film Festival is running from 6th-17th July 2021.
