James Cameron’s Avatar 2 is now called Avatar: The Way Of Water – and the first film is heading back to cinemas too.

At the ongoing CinemaCon expo taking place in Las Vegas, Disney has been taking the wraps off the first of James Cameron’s four upcoming sequels to one of the biggest movies of all time, Avatar.

To say it’s been a long time coming is no understatement, and the first trailer for the film is confirmed to be landing next week. But also, we now know what the first of the sequels will be called. It’s Avatar 2 no more. Forever more, it shall be known as Avatar: The Way Of Water. Or ATWOW. Take your pick.

Disney is clearly conscious of fears that the Avatar audience will have long gone, and thus the first film is getting a fresh cinema outing to get us all in the mood again. It’s been remastered of course, and the plan is to get that in cinemas on September 23rd. Presumably a fresh physical media release will happen too.

And then, Avatar: The Way Of Water will land in cinemas on December 16th. No pressure on the film at all…
