Avatar sequels are set to cost $1bn to make

Avatar, not Avatar 3

The bill for Avatar 2 through to Avatar 5 is set to top $1bn, as James Cameron continues to work on the four planned sequels.

Well, yikes. Before the world went into lockdown, James Cameron was working away on his planned collection of Avatar films, of which four are currently planned (the number hasn’t grown for a little while, so it’s safe to say for the time being that four is the final total).

He was filming in New Zealand, and that’s a place on the planet where restrictions are being lifted and moviemaking can get underway again. And in the midst of a story at Deadline suggesting that Avatar 2 through to 5 can get moving again soon comes the reveal of the budget: these four films combined are going to cost Disney an astonishing $1bn.

There’s little doubt that Cameron will put that money on the screen, and he’s prevailed over naysayers before. But inevitably there’s some degree of questioning over whether the enthusiasm remains for more Pandora adventures. No studio has spent $1bn on a series of movies up front before, and this was a decision that Disney inherited too when it bought 20th Century Fox.

Again: write Cameron off at your peril, we’re just glad we don’t have to foot the bill. As things stand, Avatar 2 is in cinemas at the end of 2021.

We’ll keep you posted…
