2020 marks the 35th anniversary of Back To The Future, and Universal is planning to celebrate.

Universal Pictures is planning to go to town to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the first Back To The Future movie this year, having announced last October a bunch of ways it’s planning to mark the occasion.

A posh press release teased “theatrical events”, which suggests that one if not all of the movies are going to be coming back to cinemas. But also there’s confirmation that the trilogy will be released on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in 2020 too. Now, The Digital Bits has got word that the release is likely to land in June or July of this year, in line with the birthday celebrations of the first film. No official announcement has been made yet as to exact release dates, though.

On top of that, there’s a new comic series coming from IDW Publishing, Playmobil has picked up the toy rights to the trilogy and will be issuing a bunch of stuff. There will be a new board game, collectible movie prints, Funko POP! figures and a whole bunch of other stuff to buy. Plus the debut of Back To The Future: The Musical, which debuts in Manchester in the next few weeks.

When we get a date for the theatrical re-release, we’ll let you know.
