Ethan Hawke gives an update on a fourth Before movie, and says it’s being chatted about.

Richard Linklater’s Before… trilogy, starring Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, is that rarest of things: a trilogy of films without a weak chapter in it. Across Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight – each made nine years apart – we’ve seen the developing relationship between Celine and Jesse. And fans of the series will be only too aware that the year 2022 marks the next nine year marker in the characters’ story.

Will, then, we be getting a Before 4 (as it won’t be called) in the years ahead? Ethan Hawke, chatting to IndieWire, admits that he, Delpy and Linklater have talked about it. But he added “if the first three were all nine years apart, the fourth would not follow that trajectory”. He said that “Linklater would want a different path, either a short film set four years after Midnight, or a feature two decades in the future”.

By the sounds of it, the plan is at some point to make a further chapter in Celine and Jesse’s story. But also, there’s no strict adherence to the nine year cycle that they’re planning to stick to. The third film, incidentally, was shot before it was even announced. Who knows if they’ll do something similar this time around…
