The trailer for Paul Verhoeven’s latest film Benedetta has been released.

Appearing as part of the official Cannes selection this coming summer, a trailer for Benedetta has been released. Set in the 17th century it focusses on a young nun who has disturbing visions and becomes involved in a love affair with her female companion.

The lesbian period drama genre shows no signs of slowing down with two recent high proifle entries, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire and Ammonite, igniting more interest in the sub-genre. Benedetta seems to have all the hallmarks of these – a mostly female led environment, period dress and lots of longing looks. Coming from Verhoeven though, it doesn’t look like this one will be a slow burner, at least if the trailer is anything to go by.

Verhoeven has most recently directed thriller Elle with Isabelle Huppert, but his most well known works to most are likely still to be RoboCop and Showgirls. So yes, the director of Showgirls and RoboCop is making a steamy romance about nuns. I for one, am very excited.

Take a look at the trailer below and let us know your thoughts!
