Brendan Fraser has revealed a few details about The Whale, the next project from Darren Aronofsky.

Director Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move is currently available to watch in the UK via video on demand, and there’s a lot to love in that film. Not least seeing Brendan Fraser returning to movies that will be seen by wider audiences. After several years out of filmmaking, with only a handful of small projects to his name, it’s great to see Fraser back where he belongs.

Along with working with Martin Scorsese on the upcoming Killers Of The Flower Moon, Fraser is now also leading the cast for A24’s The Whale, which was announced back in January. What’s more, the actor has offered a few scant details about the project, stating that “it’s gonna be like something you haven’t seen before. That’s really all I can tell you.”

The film is directed by maverick filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who hasn’t released a film since 2017’s divisive mother!, which was a biblically-driven surrealist nightmare that divided audiences and critics. It was always going to be a toss-up as to whether Aronofsky responded to the criticism of mother! by reverting to a more mainstream style as he has in the past with films like The Wrestler, or continued to push in stranger directions. We’re hoping that this comment from Fraser indicates the latter.

Fraser also revealed that production has wrapped on the film, stating it is “already in the can” and that his role included “a lot of make-up and prosthetics” which isn’t surprising, considering  the plot follows ‘a reclusive English teacher who, weighing in at 600 pounds, lives marooned on a couch. Redemption may be within reach as he tries to reconnect with his estranged, sharp-tongued daughter.’

A24 is handling worldwide distribution. We also have further casting details too, with the news that Hong Chau, Sadie Sink, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins will all feature.  Any new Aronofsky project always promises to be something quite different, and with Fraser once more headlining a film, we’re excited for this one. We’ll being you more details on The Whale as we hear them.
