The Cut Above Awards, hosted by British Film Editors, is using its second year to expand – with five new categories celebrating film and TV editing.

2022 will mark the second year of the Cut Above Awards, which rewards editors for their often-overlooked work. Hosted by British Film Editors (BFE for short), the awards ceremony is the only one of its kind in the UK. Now it’s expanding, with five new categories being revealed – including awards for animation and comedy genres. Two new awards will focus on British-made entertainment.

In its first year, the winners included Parasite editor Jinmo Yang, Michelle Tesoro (who worked on Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit), and the editors of war documentary Once Upon A Time In Iraq. This year the ceremony will be held virtually on 29th April, and will be streamed globally via YouTube.

The first round of nominees will be announced on social media on 11th March. For now, take a look at the categories below –

Best Edited Single Drama

Best Edited Single Documentary or Non-Fiction Programme

Best Edited Single Animation

Best Edited Series: Comedy

Best Edited Series: Animation

Best Edited Series: Drama

Best Edited Series: Documentary or Non-Fiction

Best Edited British Programme: Drama

Best Edited British Programme: Documentary or Non-Fiction

Chris Crookall Award for Breakthrough Editor

Michael Johns Award for Outstanding Assistant Editor

It’s certainly refreshing to see an awards ceremony dedicated specifically to those who work hard behind the scenes, whether that’s in film or television. In the USA, their work is recognised through awards ceremonies held by their respective guilds – for editors this is the American Cinema Editors Awards, known as the ‘Eddies’. But it’s something we don’t really do in the UK, so it’s good to see British Film Editors step in to fill the void.

BFE is a non-profit association of editors and assistants that work across all genres of UK film, TV, and streaming. It looks to support its current members as well as nurturing new editing talent, and promoting the work that editors contribute to the arts. The Cut Above Awards are definitely an effective way of getting that done.

The nominees for the 2022 Cut Above Awards will be announced on 11th March.
