A major new film and TV studio development is coming to the middle of Birmingham.

For some time now, Peaky Blinders creator and movie writer/director Steven Knight has been trying to bring a studio production facility to his beloved Birmingham. At one stage it looked like he was going to get it set up just outside of the city, near Birmingham Airport. Now, though, he’s secured a site near the middle of the city, and it looks like the project is pressing ahead this spring.

It’ll be known as Mercian Studios, and the development is a 39 acre site in the Digbeth area of the city centre. Knight told Birmingham Live that he’s hoping to make the official announcement in March, and that “it’s a very ambitious project that will begin as soon as the contracts are signed with the interested parties. Then it’s all systems go”.

Mercian Studios will house film, television, animation and virtual reality projects, and will also include bring with it new residential, retail and food and drink developments too. The idea being that it won’t just be a place to get projects moving, but also to hang out.

Knight is also to work with the BFI and the City Of Birmingham University to develop and introduce apprenticeships to help people get into the industry.
