Chris Evans speaks out to address fan concern about new Toy Story spin-off Lightyear not using the voice talents of series regular, Tim Allen.

One of the big stories emerging from Disney’s recent spate of film announcements was Chris Evans’ casting as the legendary space ranger, Buzz Lightyear, in its upcoming Toy Story spin-off Lightyear. The news understandably upset some Toy Story fans who believed that Tim Allen, who has so memorably portrayed the character throughout the Pixar series, was being sidelined.

Evans took to Instagram (reported by Dark Horizons) to ease concerns and point out that his character is a different Buzz Lightyear to Allen’s, instead being the actual space ranger that Allen’s toy version is modelled upon.

You can see Evan’s thoughts below:

“Working with Pixar is a dream come true. I’ve been a massive fan of their films since the very beginning. My team could barely contain their excitement when they told me that Pixar had a pitch for me. All they said was Buzz Lightyear.

I didn’t know what that meant, since Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear, and no one could ever touch his performance. I needed to know how this character was different and why this story was worth telling.

I can say two things with absolute confidence: 1. I didn’t stop smiling through the ENTIRE pitch. Ear to ear. 2. Everyone can rest easy. And get very excited. Trust me when I say that they REALLY know what they’re doing over there. This one is gonna special, and it doesn’t step on a single thing.”

The film is set to release in cinemas in June of 2022. You’ll hear more on Lightyear as we do.
