A direct sequel to the first Cloverfield movie is on the way, it’s been revealed – more details here.

Since Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield movie pretty much burst out of nowhere all the way back in 2008, a couple of films have come along that have existing in the same universe as the original. The terrific 10 Cloverfield Lane was sort-of-shoehorned into become a Cloverfield film in post production, whilst Paramount lost confidence in The Cloverfield Paradox and sold it to Netflix instead of releasing it itself.

Still, the studio still has interest in more Cloverfield movies, and it’s put into development a direct follow-up to the first film. Joe Barton has been hired to write the script to the movie, with JJ Abrams producing. Few specifics are known, save for the fact that the new sequel won’t be a found footage film.

Barton is also working on a Gotham City-set police TV show for HBO Max. It’s unclear as of yet who’ll direct Cloverfield 2, as we’re sure it won’t be called. But we’ll pass on more information as we get it…
