More star power is added to Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming live action Pinocchio retelling, that he’s making for Disney.

If you happen to be a fan of the Pinocchio story, then great days are ahead. As well as the stop motion Guillermo del Toro Netflix stop motion animation version that’s underway, there’s also the live action Robert Zemeckis version of the story being developed for Disney. That project currently has twinkly-eyed Tom Hanks to star as twinkly-eyed tailor Geppetto, as we originally reported here.

Now, further casting has been announced, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt joining the cast to voice Jiminy Cricket, the second greatest spirit guide in cinematic history (the first of course is the ‘weird naked’ Native American Indian in Wayne’s World 2). Excitingly, Cynthia Erivo has also boarded the project and is set to play the Blue Fairy. As well as being an outstanding actor, we all know that Erivo can sing exceptionally well too, so here’s hoping the Blue Fairy gets a few musical numbers.

The duo join Lorraine Bracco, Luke Evans, Keegan Michael Kay and of course, Hanks.

However, del Toro’s competing project is not to be outdone, boasting its own array of star power, with Gregory Mann in the title role, supported by Ewan McGregor as Cricket and David Bradley as Geppetto. Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Finn Wolfhard are also set to appear in the animated version.

Zemeckis’ live action version is expected to launch on Disney+ sometime in 2022. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
