Cynthia Erivo will produce and star in a remake of The Rose.

Two time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo is to produce and star in a remake of the 1979 film The Rose. The film saw Bette Midler playing a 1960s rock star and looked at the high price of fame. Erivo will take on the lead role in the film for production company Searchlight, giving the story a modern lens whilst still looking at these elements of fame and the emotional cost to stars.

The original film was loosely based on Janis Joplin and went on the score Midler an Oscar nomination, so don’t be surprised if Erivo ends up on those ballots again soon.

With a writer and director still to be announced, it’ll be a while before this one makes it to our screens, but we’ll let you know of any updates.
