The team behind Amy and Senna have turned their attention to Diego Maradona.

The team behind the outstanding documentaries Amy and Senna, led by director Asif Kapadia, is bringing the story of Diego Maradona to the big screen.

The film will cover the colourful life of the footballing superstar, and it’s been put together from over 500 hours of footage from Maradona’s own personal archive. It’s billed as ‘the story behind the greatest football player of all time’.

The film – which will be called Diego Maradona – will be arriving in cinemas around the UK from June 14th.

And as per the official press announcement, Kapadia said that “I wanted to try to understand this charismatic genius, to show all sides of his personality, focussing on his time in Naples, when he became the greatest player in the world, but also where his problems began to spiral out of control. It was vital to make a film about Diego which appeals to people who love football but also those who have little interest in sport or who see Maradona as a cheat. I wanted to challenge these preconceptions and to understand this complex, brilliant character – enabling him to tell his story in his own words, revealing his struggles for success but also the devastating effects of fame and fortune”.

More information on the movie is expected closer to release. As it stands, one official still has been released, and it looks like this…
