Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced that a filmed version of the hugely successful musical Hamilton is heading to Disney+ – and very soon.

Now here’s a surprise. Disney had paid a hefty amount of money for the rights to release a filmed version of the award-winning musical Hamilton, but that wasn’t going to land in cinemas until October 2021.

Yet the creator of the musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has just dropped the news that a filmed version of the Broadway production will now be landing on Disney+. What’s more, it’s arriving very, very soon: the production will arrive on the service from July 3rd 2020. That’s just under two months away.

We’re awaiting confirmation that this is worldwide and not just restricted to the US. But we’d be surprised if this isn’t a global rollout. [UPDATE: Confirmed, this is UK too]

For the minute, here’s the teaser that Miranda has just posted…

And we’ve now had the official press announcement, that adds…

Filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, “Hamilton” features Tony Award® winners Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton; Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler; Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr; Tony Award nominees Christopher Jackson as George Washington; Jonathan Groff as King George; Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton; and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds; Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison; and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton.

The cast also includes Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Hope Easterbrook, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Elizabeth Judd, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart and Ephraim Sykes.

More as we hear it…
