A teaser trailer has been released for Disney’s Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers – coming to Disney+ on 20th May.

In a surprising turn of events, Disney has revived 1980s cartoon Chip ‘N Dale’s Rescue Rangers. The characters are getting their own feature film on Disney+, but with a Roger Rabbit-esque twist. Chip and Dale are real-life actors, are now washed-up celebrities in need of a reboot. The newly-released teaser trailer shows just how much fun can be had with that premise.

The leading duo is voiced by some well-known comedians, with Andy Samberg as Dale and John Mulaney playing Chip. Director Akiva Schaffer is also no stranger to comedy. He’s part of the group of comedians known as The Lonely Island, which Samberg is also involved with, and produced 2020 time loop rom-com Palm Springs. With these accomplished comedians leading the film, it’s no wonder it looks witty and full of smart references.

Take a look at the trailer below –

It’s been a while since a film successfully mixed animation with live action, and Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers looks even more ambitious. Chip is still existing in the 2D world of hand-drawn animation, while Dale has updated his look with dreaded CGI surgery. From the trailer it looks like there are also plenty of interesting supporting characters. Even Roger Rabbit and Scrooge McDuck make appearances.

For better or worse, there look to be many Free Guy-like ‘meta’ referential moments, from the uncanny characters of Cats putting in an appearance to a joke about how Chip’s classic costume mimics Indiana Jones. Nevertheless the movie seems like a incredibly fun family film.

Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers debuts exclusively on Disney+ on 20th March.
