Director Neill Blomkamp confirms that the long-mooted sequel to District 9 is currently being written, and that the project is alive.

It’s been over five years since we last had a Neill Blomkamp-directed feature film on the big screen. In that time, he’s tried to get a belated sequel to Aliens off the ground, and was for a while attached to RoboCop Returns. This year, we’ll get to see his latest feature, Conviction, which is now in post-production, and that’ll mark his first film since the underrated Chappie.

Thankfully, by the sounds of it, he’s not hanging around too long for his next project.

The film that brought him to the attention of the filmgoing world was the superb District 9, a sizeable commercial success for Sony, and a Best Picture Oscar nominee as well. For a while, a sequel to that movie was mooted, but never came to fruition. But now, Blomkamp has taken to his Twitter feed to offer the first news on the project in some time. Bottom line? It’s happening after all.

It’s one Tweet so far, but in it, Blomkamp confirms that he’s writing the script with Terri Tatchell and Sharlto Copley. Don’t believe us? Here’s the man himself…

No further information as of yet, but very excited for this. As we hear more, we’ll be letting you know…
