With filming still set to begin this spring, Marvel is hunting for a new Doctor Strange 2 director.

In a surprising move, last week Marvel and director Scott Derrickson parted company on the upcoming sequel Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness. Derrickson had helmed the first movie, and had been teasing that the sequel would be effectively Marvel’s first horror movie. Creative differences were cited for his departure.

Marvel is still keen to keep the project on track for a 2021 release, and various options for a new director are being considered.

On the shortlist? Well, We Got This Covered is reporting that whilst names such as Brad Bird and Robert Rodriguez have been put forward by fans, that Marvel is considered Mike Flanagan (who most recently directed Doctor Sleep) and Jennifer Kent (of The Babadook and The Nightingale).

Marvel, as you’d expect, is playing its cards close to its chest, so take these as rumour for the time being. But also, it’s likely to make its mind up fairly quickly. After all, production on the movie is still set to begin this coming May, with Benedict Cumberbatch leading the ensemble.
