Don’t go looking for 9 To 5 2 anytime soon – the project looks like it’s not happening.

Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton scored one of the earliest comedy breakout hits of the 1980s with the terrific 9 To 5. And in recent times, there’s been chatter about a sequel to the much-loved film. Had all gone to plan, the original cast would have returned for the new film, and last year, Dolly Parton for one was talking about how much they all wanted to do the movie.

But it’s not to be. As she hit the red carpet to promote her Netflix TV show Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, she broke the news that the 9 To 5 follow-up has hit the buffers.

“I don’t think we’re going to do the sequel”, she told Entertainment Tonight. She further explained that “we never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good”.

By way of solace to fans, she did say that she, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda were thinking “we might do a completely different thing together”, but what that is remains to be seen.

More as we hear it.
