Dracula-inspired Last Voyage Of The Demeter ready to set sail

The long-gestating Amblin thriller Last Voyage Of The Demeter takes its inspiration from Dracula’s sea crossing from Carpathia to London.

Amblin is moving ahead with The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, a haunting thriller that is based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel, Dracula.

You may well recall the scene from Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 adaptation of the book where Dracula makes the voyage across the sea to London, with the dark vampire picking off the crew one by one for sustenance. This cursed voyage, the paranoia, the fear, the sense of an unseen malevolent presence lurking just out of sight will form the basis of The Last Voyage Of The Demeter's story, according to Deadline.

Scribe Zak Olkewicz, who has also penned the upcoming Brad Pitt action movie Bullet Train, has written the script, whilst Andre Øvredal – helmer of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is on board to direct. We’ve known for a while that Øvredal has been tapped to helm this one, but with the casting of Corey Hawkins, who you may remember as Dr Dre in the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, it seems this project may finally be happening.

The first attempt at making The Last Voyage Of The Demeter was penned by Bragi Schut in 2002 and has gone through several rewrites since then. Different directors have been attached to the project at various points, including Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake helmer Marcus Nispel. Now, it looks like this intriguing project may be finally set for production.

We’ll keep you posted regarding further casting updates as we hear them.
