Legendary officially green-lights Dune Part 2 following its very solid despite opening in a tough blockbuster market.

Dune has powered its way to a $223m global total at the box office so far, seemingly answering the questions as to whether the film’s release would be successful. Strong word of mouth has translated into good box office numbers, especially in America where the film earned a $41m opening weekend haul, despite being available to watch at home on HBO Max to those who have a subscription.

Director Denis Villeneuve has been openly pushing for a sequel, seemingly willing it it into existence. Back in August, he revealed that the sequel will follow Zendaya’s character, Chani, also stating that the script was in progress, stating that “I’m writing [the second one] now, and I feel like I’m eight years old again. That’s very uncommon for me. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it where I’m watching one of my movies, and I have a moment of deep gratitude, of deep joy, and I say, ‘Thank you, life, for having allowed me to bring that to the screen.’ [laughs] I don’t know how other people will feel about it. But me? Denis Villeneuve when he was 14 years old? Thank you”.

Legendary made its announcement on Twitter, meaning we’ll most likely be seeing Villeneuve head straight into production on the film, which will almost certainly get an exclusive theatrical release next time. We’ll bring you more news on the Dune sequel as we hear it.
