The Fall Guy will feature Blunt opposite Ryan Gosling as stunt performers who hunt the odd bounty in their spare time.
We’ve had a major casting announcement for The Fall Guy, which is set to shoot in Australia later this year. Whilst we already knew that that the film is set to feature Ryan Gosling in the role made famous by The Six Million Dollar Man himself, Lee Majors, it has now been revealed that the actor will be joined by Emily Blunt.
The more we hear about this project, the more we like.
With Blunt presumably picking up the role played by Heather Thomas in the 1980s TV show, we’re looking forward to seeing the two actors flex their comic chops alongside their respective (and undoubted) action prowess. Leitch has proved with the recently-released Bullet Train that he’s more than adept at balancing comedy with explosive set pieces. Hopefully, there’ll be a little less of the rather intrusive green screen work that found its way into the closing stages of that movie though, especially given that the world of The Fall Guy is built around practical stunt performers. That will of course depend largely upon the script, which has been penned by Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw writer Drew Pearce.
As for Blunt’s involvement, we wonder if that will dampen the prolonged rumours about the actor playing Sue Storm in the Marvel universe alongside (husband) John Krasinski, who played an alternate version of Storm’s husband, Reed Richards in the recent Doctor Strange film. With the two films set to release just six months apart, it’s not inconceivable that Blunt could star in both projects, but considering Marvel Studios likes to leave a window of a full year for post-production work on its films, by our estimation, that means both projects will be shooting at around the same time.
Leitch spoke about the project a couple of weeks back, whilst doing the press rounds for Bullet Train, saying “I can tell you a little. It’s a reimagining of the show from the ’80s, the late ’70s, early ’80s, starring Lee Majors. It’s about a stuntman who gets embroiled in some crazy drama outside of the movie business, and mayhem ensues. And so, there’s fun and action, and we’re trying to make a big summer movie with it. And Universal’s incredibly supportive. And then it’s so rich with anecdotes from Kelly [McCormick, producer]’s experiences, my experiences, Ryan’s experiences. We’re definitely going to have a lot of fun playing with the movie, our movie experiences inside of this movie.”
We’re certainly curious to see how that last element might turn out. Any Hollywood filmmaker’s use of ‘insider humour’ doesn’t always translate well for audiences, as we saw with Ocean’s Twelve or more recently, The Matrix Resurrections. Whether The Fall Guy can walk that line though, is something we’re looking forward to finding out in March of 2024 when the film is set to release, doubly so now that Emily Blunt is set to co-star in the film.
