Film Stories’ second birthday: our ten most popular podcasts so far

A few words as Film Stories hits a bit of a milestone today: it’s two years since its very first podcast episode was released into the world.

Well, crikey. Two years ago today, the first episode of the Film Stories podcast was nervously uploaded to places where podcasts go to be sent into the world. I’ve bored many of you with the story lots of times, so I’ll keep it brief. I’d just lost my superhero mum after a short, sudden illness. The job of over a decade that I loved was coming to an end pretty unexpectedly too. I was a bit lost, and so started talking into a microphone. As much for my own mental health and well being in truth. I just need something a little bit for me.

It’d be fair to say I had no idea where this would lead. The support I got after releasing that first podcast was a glimmer of light in a very dark time, and as twee as it sounds, it meant the world to me. It still does. The support that’s built since has blown me away. That one podcast has led to two separate print publications, this website, over a dozen live events and losing a posh award? Well, I genuinely can’t thank you enough. It really has been pivotal in me finding a new way forward.

I’ve never gone back and deleted or re-edited the early episodes of the podcast, because… well, they’re me. They’re raw, but they’re just as much one nerdy man with a wonky eye sat in a room as the others. I still only have a battered old laptop to record it all on, I use Audacity, I spent £50 in the Amazon sale in the end to get a better mic. But that really is it. I think my confidence has grown over these two years, but I want to leave them all in place to show the full journey of it all. If I can do it, you can do it.

Here, if you’re interested, are the ten most popular episodes to date, in no particular order. Some of them are rawer than others, some I’m tempted to go back and record. But I know I gave each of them everything I had, with what I had, at the point they were recorded.

If you want to support the podcast, and this clickbait-free website, I do have a Patreon, here. But just the fact that you’ve shown interest, listened, subscribed, left a nice review? Any of those things, you’ve got me this far.

Thank you so, so much.
