There’s a ‘Flash Gordon approaching gag’ to be made here, but we’re going to let you fill that in for yourself.

It was revealed a month or two back that on the roster of special re-releases from StudioCanal this year is the 80s fantasy classic, Flash Gordon. The movie, starring Sam L Jones, Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton, Max Von Sydow et al, and from director Mike Hodges, is getting a 4K remaster this year. And we’re rather excited to see it.

A few new details have come to light too, courtesy of The Raygun newsletter (that you can sign up for here).

It reports that the team who worked on StudioCanal’s 4K restorations of the John Carpenter catalogue have been at work on Flash Gordon, and that includes the Queen soundtrack too. What’s more, the work is pretty much complete, and the release is edging closer.

We now learn too that not only is a physical Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray release planned of the movie, the film is also set to return to cinemas for a day in May. The exact date hasn’t yet been confirmed, but you can bet we’ll keep you posted.

And more news too on that physical release: a five-disc collectors’ edition Blu-ray set – five discs! – is being lined up for June, as well as the 4K release. And we’ll have a lot more news on all of this as we get it. It’s not gone up for pre-order yet, and we’ll bring you the link when it does.
