Universal has bagged the rights to the coveted upcoming novel The Maid with Florence Pugh set to star and produce.

Florence Pugh’s star continues to rise with the announcement that she will both star in and produce The Maid for Universal, after the studio came out on top of a competitive round of bidding to secure the as-yet unreleased debut novel by Nita Prose.

Pugh’s involvement would have certainly made the package deal all the more attractive, given the continued collection of absorbing performances she keeps putting in. In recent times she’s starred in Fighting With My Family, Midsommar and Little Women, the latter of which she was Oscar nominated for. She also co-stars in the upcoming Marvel film Black Widow, which is set to release next year.

According to DeadlineThe Maid is ‘set for publication in 2022 via Penguin Random House in the U.S. and Canada and HarperFiction in the UK … the novel blends the charm of Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine with an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery. It is set at the Regency Grand Hotel, where Molly the maid leaves every room perfect and pristine, while getting to know each guest’s dirty secrets. A Clue-like, locked-room whodunnit, The Maid explores Molly’s descent into the murderous underbelly of her gilded workplace, while telling a timely story about the strengths of our differences.’

Pugh is currently shooting Don’t Worry Darling, the next film from Booksmart's Olivia Wilde for New Line. She is expected to begin production on The Maid following the completion of that project, which is due for release later in 2021.
