A $75m deal secures STX the global rights to the upcoming Gerard Butler-headlined Greenland 2 – more details right here.

We’re rather fond of the work of Gerard Butler around these quarters, and the world-under-threat thriller Greenland – that eventually debuted on Amazon’s Prime Video service earlier this year – is a real treat.

Without giving anything specific away, the movie does leave things open for a further adventure, and the announcement came a few weeks ago that Butler would be returning for Greenland 2. Also returning are writer Chris Sparling and director Ric Roman Waugh, as well as some other cast members we won’t name lest you’ve not seen the original.

This time around, the chances of a cinema release seem stronger, not least with the news that STX has shelled out for the global rights to the movie. It’s paid a not cheap sum we understand for global distribution for the sequel – around $75m – which is due to go before the cameras in 2022. A start date then points towards a release in 2023, although exactly when remains to be seen.

The picture above is clearly Gerard getting the news of the deal about to be completed.

We’ll keep you posted on this one. We’re really rather keen to seen it.
