The Wonder Twins, who first debuted in 1970s Saturday morning cartoons, will be getting the feature film treatment it’s been announced.

One of the least likely superhero properties we’d imagine to be green-lit would be Wonder Twins, a pair of shape-shifting alien siblings who featured on the incredibly kitsch 1970s DC animated show The All-New Super Friends Hour. But that’s most definitely the world we live in now, where increasingly left-field superhero films are being commissioned all of the time.

Adam Sztykiel, the writer of the upcoming Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson, has been announced as the writer and director for this project, and we can only imagine that the plans here are to lean heavily into the inherent silliness of the premise. Plot details are under wraps at the moment, but the idea is for this one to go to HBO Max in the US. Whilst the Wonder Twins characters have been used in a more serious manner in the intervening decades, including reappearances in the comics and showing up briefly in Smallville, we hope that Sztykiel is looking to do something fun with them.

When the twins hold hands and say their phrase, “Wonder Twin powers, activate”, Jayna can turn into any animal, whilst Zan can turn into any state of water. Whether Gleek, the twins’ pet monkey will show up too, has as of yet, not been confirmed. We’ll keep you updated on the state of Wonder Twins as we hear more.
